Why I think Russian women make great girlfriends
The only Russians I know I met online, so my perception can be skewed, but I believe Russian women make excellent girlfriends and wives because:
Although it may not be the best result of living under an authoritarian regime, their patience makes Russian women reliable long-term partners. Besides, their ability to weather hardships is also invaluable in lifelong relationships.
It’s why they keep voting for the same politicians decade after decade, but it also preserves many relationships and marriages. Besides, you can use a promise of safety to make yourself irresistible when you meet Russian singles.
Most Russian women successfully combine careers and families, allowing their husbands and partners to be breadwinners. But, unlike most American conservatives, Russians aren’t religious, so a Russian partner won’t drag you to church every Sunday.
If you’re still unconvinced you should meet Russian singles, let’s switch from my subjective take to statistics, because you can’t argue with those.
Russian women: Hard facts
I never claimed to be an expert on single Russian women, but I know my sociological and psychological research. Here’s what I learned:
- Russian women crave the “Instagram face”. Between 2023 and 2024, cosmetic surgeries rose by 30%, and almost 60% were performed in Moscow. 40% of adult women under 35 believe cosmetic surgery is necessary for achieving career and relationship success.
- Russians equate suffering to love. 63% of Russians believe a woman’s primary role is to be a wife and mother. At the same time, most men consider violence and abuse part and parcel of marriage. The local saying roughly translates to, “If he hits me, he loves me.”
- Online dating in Russia is weird. Tinder and other popular apps left Russia in 2022. In 2024, the government advised border region citizens to avoid dating sites to not feed intelligence to the Ukrainian forces.
- Russian relationships are lasting, but not forever. In 2020, around 80% of Russians were in a relationship for at least a year. Yet, the average divorce rate is 4.7 per 1,000 people, one of the highest globally.
These should give you a better idea of what to expect when you meet Russian ladies for the first time.
Russian culture: What differences can you expect?
Despite the Cold War and ongoing political tensions, the Russian Federation and the US aren’t as different as you might believe. At least, that’s what the seven dimensions of culture tell us:
Universalism | Particularism |
---|
Unlike Americans, Russians can ignore rules when it suits them (and they are safe from the local militia). They’ll cut corners and twist things in their favor. It can be handy until your Russian girlfriend gets into trouble. That’s why it’s so important to highlight non-negotiable terms of your relationship and/or cohabitation.
Individualism | Communitarianism |
---|
Russians and Americans are equally individualistic. Still, it’s important to set things straight when discussing family matters and plans. Your Russian girlfriend may include estranged relatives in your discussions while you’re talking about your couple.
Specific | Diffuse |
---|
Much like Americans, Russians rarely mix their personal and business affairs. For the most part, your Russian girlfriend will stay out of your business and expect you to respect her privacy. It’s also why some Russian women can get jealous if you give them cause to doubt your loyalty.
Neutral | Affective |
---|
Compared to Americans, Russians are less reserved. If your Russian girlfriend gets mad or unhappy, you’ll see it clearly in her body language and expression. It also makes them bad liars, which is a good thing for long-term relationships.
Achievement | Ascription |
---|
Like most authoritarian societies, Russians value status and connections over personal achievements. Your girlfriend will be more impressed with the size of your house or the car you’re driving than your degree or your bowling record. It may come off as excessively pragmatic and materialistic at first, but don’t let it ruin your relationship.
Sequential | Synchronic |
---|
Americans are more practical and punctual than Russians. It means your date will often be late and answer texts and phone calls while you’re telling her about your coworkers. Keeping her attention can be a challenge, but your Russian girlfriend will always find ways to keep busy.
Internal | External |
---|
Russians are much more likely to go with the flow than Americans, who prefer to take control over circumstances. Most single Russian women are pretty fatalistic, but they are also adaptable, which is a good thing if you want your partner to move to the States and live with you.
Please note that cultural dimensions do not reflect the disruptive impact of aggressive propaganda, which has been ever-present throughout the last two decades. Its brainwashing power could skew Russians’ attitudes and perceptions.
Best and worst places to meet Russian women
DO NOT visit Russia unless you want to see the inside of a Russian jail cell. That being said, let me walk you through a couple of best and worst places to go looking for a Russian girlfriend.
Best places:
- Turkey or the EU. Millions of Russians are spread across Europe, so you’ll have no trouble finding them. Just make sure you’re actually talking to a Russian, not a Ukrainian or a Belarusian, or you might offend them.
- Events for Russian migrants. These range from movie screenings to standup shows and concerts. You’ll find them in most European countries, and the audience will be overwhelmingly Russian.
- Local language classes. You can volunteer as a native English speaker or join classes teaching German, French, Italian, or Turkish, where you might also meet Russian singles.
Worst places:
- Anywhere in Russia. The Department of State advises not to visit Russia. As an American, you can be arrested on false accusations and become a political hostage. Besides, there are no direct flights to Russia from the US or the EU, so your travel expenses will be through the roof.
- Anywhere in neighboring countries. Ukraine and Belarus are out of the question for obvious reasons, but Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Armenia can become Russia’s next victims at any moment. Besides, some support the ongoing invasion, which may be dangerous for Americans and Europeans.
Even if you remember my advice, there’s no guarantee you’ll connect with eligible Russian single women on your first try. That’s why I always recommend looking for potential partners online before buying plane tickets.
Secrets to succeeding with Russian women
I never got a chance to meet Russian women in person, but I know a few guys married to Russians. Here are a few pointers they shared with me:
- Chivalry is very much alive in Russia. Open doors for ladies, help them into their seats, and pick up the check at the end of the night.
- Romantic gestures will be appreciated. Bring her flowers and chocolates, offer to carry heavy bags, and thank her for the time you spent together in a text.
- Bring out your best outfit for the date. Russian women invest much time into their looks, and you’ll want to look the part when you’re together.
- Pay compliments to their looks and skills. Single Russian ladies are often underappreciated, so they’ll love every kind word you have for them. Locals say that Russian women “love with their ears.”
Beyond these basics, be kind, compassionate, and a good listener—and most Russian girls won’t be able to resist you.
Things you should never do or say to a Russian woman
Whatever you do, do not:
- Criticize Putin, the invasion of Ukraine, or the military. Any Russian can get arrested for agreeing with you.
- Talk about WWII, the Cold War, or who beat Hitler. Most Russians prefer to ignore the USSR fighting alongside Nazis for two years.
- Bring up money casually. It’s considered impolite to ask about a person’s income unless you’re good friends.
- Drink heavily. Although most Russian men are heavy drinkers, women looking for foreign partners usually frown upon imbibing.
- Voice negative comments in public. If you have any constructive criticism, share it privately.
I learned these lessons the hard way when I chatted with a few girls on Discord before it was blocked in Russia. Even young women are pretty paranoid about criticizing the current regime and tend to log off instantly.
