Meeting Portuguese women: Everything you need to know
It’s interesting that although a lot of people think that Portuguese single women are very similar to Latinas (and to Brazilian women in particular), they’re actually very different when it comes to dating. Single Portuguese women don’t like flashy courting; they are more shy than Latinas and even split the bill on a date! Continue reading, I’m going to show you a lot of interesting facts about them.
Portuguese female population | 5,146,504 |

Portuguese women: Hard facts
- Portugal has one of the highest shares of dating app users—it’s 14.4%, and only 2 countries (the US and the UK) surpass Portugal in this regard. So if you’re going to meet Portuguese ladies online, you’ll have a very wide choice of ladies.
- Don’t worry about the language barrier here: Portugal is one of the top countries in the world with the highest English proficiency index—only 5 countries have a higher index, actually!
- Portuguese people don’t rush to get married—the mean age of first marriage for women is 34.3 years, so most women in their 20s and early 30s here are single or in a domestic partnership.
- More than 56% of young Portuguese live with their parents! It’s one of the highest rates in the world, and I believe it affected their dating culture, too. This probably has something to do with their high marriage age—they just don’t feel like they need to create a family if they still live with their parents. So if a girl asks you to come to her place in Portugal, she probably wants to meet your parents!
Best and worst places to meet Portuguese women

Wondering how to meet Portuguese girls? Here’s the list of the best places where you can meet single Portuguese women:
- Any big city in Portugal. There are lots of places like language lessons, dance classes, hobby clubs, and exhibitions—you can find dozens of them in Porto, Lisbon, Amadora, and Braga. You can find those groups in apps like Meetup or offline; most events are free, and most people there are friendly and open-minded.
- Lisbon—it’s the capital of the country, the largest city, and the city with the best nightlife in Portugal. Try Fabrica Moderna (art studio, exhibitions, parties), small bars like Mario Loca (friendly people, card games), a bar called O Bom, O Mau, O Vilao (interesting events)
- Beach clubs. You’re in Portugal, so ignoring its great beaches and beach parties would be stupid. Try Praia da Mata (very close to Lisbon center), Praia da Terra Estreita (not so many people but perfect sand), and Purobeach Poolside (lounges, great music, friendly people).
Where NOT to meet them?
- Gym. Approaching women in a gym is a weird strategy, but in Portugal, where people are pretty reserved, it just won’t work.
- In the center of the big city in the morning. These women are on their way to work, so approaching them would be a bad idea.
There are a lot of nice places in Portugal, and the country is 100% worth visiting, but for me, online dating is better, and this is my hill to die on. It’s faster, cheaper, much more convenient, and you have thousands of women to choose from, so even if you’ve already booked a flight to Lisbon, you should still check online dating. It works, and it works well.
❤️ Secrets to succeeding with Portuguese women
I can’t say that I’m an expert who knows everything about how to meet Portuguese women. In fact, I believe that most Portuguese men have a higher level of expertise regarding this subject. But I also can’t say that I don’t know anything about it. I spent around 6 months dating them, and I have some secrets to share:
- Think about how you present yourself. Your appearance is important, no matter what some people say. Dress elegantly, forget about casual tourist clothes, and remember: these women spend a lot of time, resources, and effort to look great. You have to respect that.
- Remember that a casual first date is the best first date for them. It makes no sense to go to a fancy restaurant if it’s your first date—the only result you’ll get is awkwardness.
- Be respectful. Do not talk about stereotypes, respect their religion (it’s essential for them), and be polite.
Stick to these basics, and you’re already doing better than most. Portuguese women appreciate guys who are real, respectful, and know how to carry themselves—so if you bring that energy, you’ve got a good shot.
Things you should never do or say to a Portuguese woman
- Don’t try to be too romantic with single Portuguese ladies. They are somewhat romantic, yes, but their dating etiquette is not similar to that in Brazil or Spain—so be casual, be relaxed, and avoid big displays of romantic feelings, at least at the beginning.
- Don’t expect them to be extra traditional and conservative. Portuguese women prefer splitting the bill, they’re hard-working and independent, and if you expect them to be perfect trad wives, it’s probably not the right country.
- Don’t think your date is sad or bored because she looks so. It’s possible, of course, but it’s important to understand that Portuguese people can often be melancholic—this doesn’t mean they don’t like you.
