Meeting Norwegian women: Everything you need to know
To be honest, my experience with Norwegian single women is not the greatest. I’m an optimist so I’m thinking about it like a scientist—negative results are still results, failures are important, too, because you learn from them, and if you never failed, you never lived… You know, all those things we say to sugar the pill.
I’m going to tell you everything I learned so that you don’t need those excuses. Let’s start with some basic facts—for example, did you know that Norway is one of the best countries in the world for English-speaking dating enthusiasts?
Norwegian female population | 49.61% |
Share of dating service users in Norway | 11.99% |
English proficiency in Norway | 87.6% |
Top cities for meeting Norwegian girls | Oslo, Bergen |
Liberal democracy index in Norway (how liberal/conservative the country is) | 0.86 |
Norwegian women: Hard facts
- They’re basically living in heaven. Norway is one of the top world countries in Women Rankings—it’s in the top-3 according to some surveys and in the top-7 according to other sources. In Norway, they have an extremely high women’s financial inclusion, little to no discriminatory laws, and a very high women’s perception of community safety.
- They do not rush and won’t push you to tie the knot. Among those never married before, the average age at marriage is 34.6 years old for women and 36.8 years old for men—they surely want to know a partner better before they finally get married.
- Norway is probably one of the best countries for short-term, casual relationships—the average number of sexual partners in this country is around 12, which is one of the highest results in the world. By the way, in Sweden, Finland, and Iceland they have from 11.8 to 13 sexual partners on average. These Northerners are something.
- But their Gen Z is exactly like everywhere else. Young people ages 18-30 from all over the world are becoming more and more sex negative, and Norway isn’t exception—more than 37% of young women there reported lack of sexual interest according to a 2022 study. A hint for you: single Norwegian women in their 30s are as hot as those in their 20s.
Best and worst places to meet Norwegian women

Here’s the list of the top 3 places you have to visit if you’re really into single Norwegian women:
- Go South. Norwegians up North do not like being approached by strangers, so it would be wise to focus on Oslo and Bergen instead of Narvik and Harstad. If you want a short-term relationship, visit bars and nightclubs—in Oslo, for example, it’s Schouskjelleren and The Whisky Bar, and in Bergen, it’s the Magic Ice Bar and Hector’s Hybel.
- But if you want something more serious, stay in Norway. The most natural way to meet a Norwegian woman for a serious relationship is meeting her in class or at work, then meeting her at the weekend, and then, building a relationship from that point.
- Dating websites. Simple, very affordable (and cheaper than going to Norway), with thousands of real women. You just need to find a good, trusted app.
Now, the places to avoid:
- Public transport or just a street. If you want to meet Norwegian singles successfully, remember this simple rule:
- Small, cozy coffee shops where local women sit with their Macs or books and have their hygge time. It might look like a perfect time and place, but it isn’t. They enjoy their personal time there or even work at that time.
If I had to choose only one option, it would probably be online dating. Yes, approaching them IRL can be a fun experience, but for me, it’s about finding the most cost-efficient solution, and the most cost-efficient solution here is international dating sites. The cost is low, the efficiency is high—these sites usually have very large dating pools full of single ladies.
Secrets to succeeding with Norwegian women
- Asking a woman for dinner on the very first date is not the best choice—it’s too serious for them, asking them for a coffee or a drink would work much better.
- Don’t expect it to become exclusive right away—in Norway, they have a specific view on dating, and during the first weeks or even months, you’ll be “hanging out”.
- Don’t insist on paying for a date. You can offer but never insist, this isn’t how it works here.
- Dress your best. Obviously.
- If you’re looking for a short-term relationship, you should prioritize your physical appearance, sense of humor, and social skills. For something more serious, different traits come to the fore: kindness, reliability, being able to understand a partner, etc. Well, that’s what scientists say, and I trust them on this.
My failed attempt at meeting a Norwegian woman and the conclusions I made
Let’s say you finally decide to meet Norwegian women IRL. You go there and see an impressively attractive blonde who doesn’t have a ring on her finger in a bus. You sit next to her, try to start talking, and then, she just says “No” and turns her head away.
That’s what I did in 2022 when I first visited Oslo. I had only 2 days there so I decided to not waste time and just meet them on the streets to learn more about their life views. I got rejected 4 times in a row and although it’s not the end of the world, I was impressed with their reservedness and confident understanding of what they want and what they don’t need in their lives at all.
I told this story to a friend of mine, an expat from California who had been living there for 5 years by that time, and he explained everything to me.
“This has nothing to do with how you look or how you speak”, he said, “it’s just Norway”. It turns out that locals have those “bubbles” of personal space and if you violate this space, they’ll most likely think it’s creepy and even threatening. They are just not used to it, that’s not how their culture works.
So, the main conclusion for me was: before you start meeting Norwegian girls, you need to read about how to meet Norwegian girls. It’s important to respect cultural differences not just to look respectful but to actually increase your chances. Simply focusing on interest clubs or even bars instead of public transport and street dating will multiply your chances of success dramatically.
